Supervisor Safety Awareness
Lift Truck Safety Awareness for Managers and Supervisors

Lift Truck Safety Awareness
'Every day at work lift truck managers and supervisors face a daunting task. Well-established laws set out managers responsibilities in terms of the health and safety of everyone affected by the work area they oversee. They must make decisions about risk and safety that could cost the lives of their friends and colleagues. Sadly, a great many people embark on these roles with little or no training for the tasks that await them'.
Health and Safety Executive, 2006
'Every employer shall ensure that any of his employees who supervises or manages the use of work equipment has received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken'.
Reg 9 (2) Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, 1998
'Employers also have the continuing responsibility to provide adequate supervision and it is therefore essential that supervisors themselves have sufficient training and knowledge to recognise safe and unsafe working practice. This does not mean that supervisors need full operator training, but they do need to understand the risks involved, and the means for avoiding or counteracting them. Training in health and safety management, risk assessment and safe systems of work should be considered. Supervisors also need sufficient training to enable them to evaluate the advice of fully trained and experienced operators to ensure that they do not over-ride the operator's advices and reduce safety'.
Guidance Note 23 - HSE Approved Code of Practice - Rider-Operated Lift Trucks: Operator Training, 1999
